LabVIEW 8.6 Digital Filter Design Toolkit ReadmeJune 2008 This file contains information to introduce you to the LabVIEW 8.6 Digital Filter Design Toolkit. This file also provides you with help resources you can use while working with the toolkit. The file contains the following information that you need to understand. OverviewThe Digital Filter Design Toolkit 8.6 is the upgrade version of the Digital Filter Design Toolkit 8.2.1. The Digital Filter Design Toolkit provides a collection of digital filter design tools to supplement the LabVIEW Full Development System. The Digital Filter Design Toolkit helps you design digital filters without requiring you to have advanced knowledge of digital signal processing or digital filtering techniques. With the Digital Filter Design Toolkit, you can design, analyze, and simulate floating-point and fixed-point digital filters. Without prior knowledge about programming in LabVIEW, you can use the Digital Filter Design Express VIs to interact graphically with filter specifications to design appropriate digital filters. The Digital Filter Design Toolkit provides VIs that you can use to design a digital finite impulse response (FIR) or infinite impulse response (IIR) filter, analyze the characteristics of the digital filter, change the implementation structure of the digital filter, and process data with the digital filter. In addition to the floating-point support, the Digital Filter Design Toolkit provides a set of VIs that you can use to create a fixed-point digital filter model, analyze the characteristics of the fixed-point digital filter, simulate the performance of the fixed-point digital filter, and generate fixed-point C code, integer LabVIEW code, or LabVIEW field-programmable gate array (FPGA) code for a specific fixed-point target. The Digital Filter Design Toolkit includes VIs for floating-point multirate digital filter design. You can use the VIs to design a floating-point single-stage or multistage multirate filter, analyze the characteristics of the floating-point multirate filter, and process data with the floating-point multirate filter. In addition to the floating-point filter design, the toolkit also provides a set of VIs that you can use to create a fixed-point multirate filter, analyze the characteristics of the fixed-point multirate filter, simulate the behavior of the fixed-point multirate filter, and generate LabVIEW FPGA code from the fixed-point multirate filter for NI-RIO targets. In addition to the graphical tools for digital filter design, the toolkit also provides MathScript functions that LabVIEW MathScript supports. These MathScript functions enable you to design filters in a text-based environment. New Features and Changes- You can perform signal processing and filtering on CompactRIO targets running the Wind River VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS).
- You can specify the unit of measurement of the delay response in samples or seconds for the DFD Plot Group Delay VI and the DFD Plot Phase Delay VI.
- In the Digital Filter Design Toolkit 8.2.1 and earlier, the Digital Filter Design VIs are on the Addons palette. In the Digital Filter Design Toolkit 8.6, the Digital Filter Design VIs are on the Signal Processing palette.

Known IssuesThe following items are known issues in the Digital Filter Design Toolkit 8.6. - The Filter Analysis VIs might take a long time to analyze a filter with a high order.
- The DFD Remez Design VI might take a long time to design an FIR filter with a high order.
- The DFD Least Pth Norm Design VI might take a long time to complete designs that have iterative algorithms.
- The Digital Filter Design Toolkit 8.6 does not allow zero-valued zeroes in the Pole-Zero Placement Express VI. If you specify a zero-valued zero, the Express VI forces the zero-valued zero to a non-zero-valued zero.
- When you design a fixed-point filter, you must configure the quantizers. Each quantizer contains a signed? Boolean that specifies whether to treat the input number as a signed number. The Digital Filter Design Toolkit 8.6 supports signed numbers only.
- The characteristics of a filter might change if numeric errors occur during the conversion between the filter coefficients of different filter structures. When you convert the structure of a filter, the filter with the new structure might be completely different from the original filter. If you encounter this situation, try using a different structure.
- You might need to compile the Digital Filter Design example VIs that demonstrate how to use generated LabVIEW FPGA code in LabVIEW projects.
- The Digital Filter Design Toolkit 8.6 does not generate FPGA code if R series support is not installed for the NI-RIO driver.
